News Letter April 2016

Kia Ora Whanau,

We have been a little bit quieter over the past week as it has been school holidays. But that does not mean we have been any less busy during our days at Mt Royal. The children here have still been learning and investigating as usual.

What has been happening?

Our children here have been very busy with so many interests over the last couple of months. We have been focusing on our bodies which incorporated how to stay healthy and the children enjoyed learning about bones and different parts of body. Next it was onto animals! The children have enjoyed exploring role play as animals, Oden the dog is a favourite as well as tigers. Then in the evening some children were on a hunt and I wondered if they had heard of the story ‘we are going on a bear hunt’ so I read the book to the children and this has reignited their curiosity for inventions (traps)

and maps to find treasure. It also is a great way to continue their exploration of animals and staying fit as the book incorporates all these themes.

If you have books on any of the above interests please feel free to bring in and share with us.

What is New?

The children created a race track outside, it is always changing in design as the children love to design and create new challenging tracks.

The bubble station outside has been a great success too. The bubble station looks simple but it covers many areas of the curriculum, science is obvious but holding the wand and dipping the wand into the tube is working on the children’s fine motor control which will help them to develop their writing skills. It is also maths as we have competitions to see how many bubbles we can pop in 30 seconds!

We are using our Mt Royal Early Learning Centre Facebook page (just search our name). So go have a look and check out our photos which we update regularly.

ERO came and we look forward to reading the report soon

Please encourage your child to sign in everyday

Please let them try to write their name independently. It may not seem like it but their circles and lines are the first step/stage to forming letters.

October Newsletter 2015

October 2015

Summer is coming! So please start to send a named hat for your child. We ask that you please send your child with 3 sets of clothes.  Water play is very popular with the children in the warmer months. If they do not have a change of clothes they will be unable to participate in the water play and will miss out on a valuable learning experience.

If you have waterproof overalls at home and would like your child to wear them at Mt Royal feel free to bring them in, but make sure they are named.

What has been happening?

Wow, so much has been happening since our last newsletter the children are continuing with transport as an interest and to extend the children even further the fire department are coming to Mt Royal on Wednesday the 7th of October. Another spontaneous interest to develop has been magic! The interest was started by some slinky paper. Brae was very interested in how it changed size and declared “it’s just like magic!” This then started an impromptu   magic show! The children were so interested in ‘magic’ that we have been doing science experiments to extend the children and show the children that science can be magical. Some science experiments so far have been making raisins dance, melting ice with salt and hearing the pop and crackle sounds coming from the ice as it melted and a magic card trick that made dots disappear!  Look out for pictures of more ‘magic’ as we do more science experiments. As the children’s interest in magic has developed more children wanted to explore magic and we could see magic exploration present all over the centre. Children were outside finding sticks to turn into wands. Making magician and wizard hats was a popular learning experience and all over the centre children could be heard practising magical words and spells. Magic became such a popular interest that we had to put on a big magic show. We even enlisted the help our friend Poka Dot the Clown. The children all dressed up and the stage was set for anyone who wanted to perform a magic trick. We made popcorn and biscuits to enjoy as the clown preformed for us.

August News Letter

August 2015

Winter is truly here! We ask that you please send your child with a warm jacket to wear outside. If they do not have a warm jacket they cannot go outside to explore and will miss out on exciting learning experiences. A great addition to a warm jacket is gumboots! Who doesn’t love to jump in puddles, but wet shoes are not fun for anybody. If you have waterproof overalls at home and would like your child to wear them at Mt Royal feel free to bring them in, but make sure they are named.

What has been happening?

The children are still interested in maths and construction. To extend the children’s learning we are going to explore the possibility of mosaics. Please feel free to donate any tiles you have spare. For some of the children they are moving towards transport and this will be one of our next centre of interest. This interest started from the Lego and trucks that was kindly donated to us by Emma’s mum (Alaina).  The Lego was a police station set with the possibility to make different police vehicles. This has re-ignited the children’s passion for transport. They love building cars, planes, boats and other vehicles that they use their imaginations to create! Outside the children are showing an interest in road safety and road rules/signs. I have spent many days being a traffic light!

Our other on going centre of interest is flags and countries. This interest has been sparked by Bastille Day. The national French day we celebrated at Mt Royal with fresh baguette and crepes, yum!

What is New?

We have started to implement a transition to school programme. We are lucky enough to have Rebecca (our permanent reliever on Mondays) who has given some ideas to bridge the gap between primary and early childhood education. The ‘get ready for school’ programme is still fun and play based but with challenges set and resources used that they will encounter at school. We will try and use their current interest to extend their learning at this time as well. As children learn best when they are engaged, motivated and having fun (check out our display board).

Please encourage your child to sign in everyday

Please let them try to write their name as it may not seem like it but their circles and lines are the first step/stage to forming letters.

Disco

Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who came along on Friday and made our Disco such a great success. We’ve had some great feedback from some of the parents already, as well as lots of smiles from the children. We’ve got plans as to how to improve for next time, but as a first disco, I think it went really well!

Photos will be being sent out along with the next newsletter in the next couple of weeks; if there is a photo that you would like for your personal collection, flick me an email at info@mtroyalelc.co.nz and I will send it out when I get a chance.

Christmas

Did you Know ???
No one knows the real birthday of Jesus! No date is given in the Bible, so why do we celebrate it on the 25th December? The early Christians certainly had many arguments as to when it should be celebrated! Also, the birth of Jesus probably didn’t happen in the year 1AD but slightly earlier, somewhere between 2BC and 7BC (there isn’t a 0AD – the years go from 1BC to 1AD!).
The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336AD, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine (he was the first Christian Roman Emperor). A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on the 25th December.
St Augustine was the person who really started Christmas in the UK by introducing Christianity in the 6th century. He came from countries that used the Roman Calendar, so western countries celebrate Christmas on the 25th December. Then people from Britain and Western Europe took Christmas on the 25th December all over the world!
The name ‘Christmas’ comes from the Mass of Christ (or Jesus). A Mass service (which is sometimes called Communion or Eucharist) is where Christians remember that Jesus died for us and then came back to life. The ‘Christ-Mass’ service was the only one that was allowed to take place after sunset (and before sunrise the next day), so people had it at Midnight! So we get the name Christ-Mass, shortened to Christmas.
Wish you all a Merry and a Safe and Happy festive season !!!
